Build a scale recreation of one of Britain's most recognisable four-wheel-drive vehicles with the Tamiya 1990 Land Rover Defender 90. This 1/10-scale RC assembly kit combines the Defender's classic three-door body with Tamiya's rugged CC-02 ladder-frame chassis for realistic trail driving, general off-road use and scale display.
The clear polycarbonate body captures the Defender 90's upright profile and short-wheelbase proportions, while separate moulded components recreate the front grille, mirrors, light housings, spare-wheel cover and distinctive outer roll cage. Front and rear light housings are also designed to accept separately available 5mm LEDs.
Underneath, the CC-02 uses a longitudinally mounted 540 brushed motor, separate gearbox and transfer case, propeller shafts and front and rear solid axles. Four-link suspension and CVA oil-filled dampers provide controlled axle movement over uneven terrain, while the differential gears can be locked during assembly for additional traction on loose or low-grip surfaces.

Is the Tamiya Defender 90 ready to run? No. This is an unassembled RC kit. The chassis, suspension, drivetrain, body and electronics require assembly before use.
Does the 58700-60A package include an ESC? No. This Australian-market package is supplied without an electronic speed controller.
Does the kit include a motor? Yes. A Type 540 brushed motor is included.
Which chassis does this model use? It uses the Tamiya CC-02 ladder-frame chassis in its short 242mm wheelbase configuration.
Why do some descriptions mention the CC-01S chassis? The 242mm wheelbase matches the dimensions used by the earlier short-wheelbase CC-01S platform. This kit itself uses the newer CC-02 chassis, not the CC-01.
Is the body pre-painted? No. The Defender body is supplied in clear polycarbonate and requires painting, trimming, drilling and sticker application.
Which paint should I use? Use Tamiya PS-series paint or another paint specifically designed for flexible polycarbonate RC bodies. Paint is normally applied to the inside of the clear shell.
Are the outer roll cage and grille part of the body moulding? No. These details are supplied as separate moulded parts for greater scale definition.
Can lights be installed? Yes. The front light housings accept two 5mm LEDs, while the rear housings can accept up to six 5mm LEDs. LEDs and a suitable lighting controller are sold separately.
Is the CC-02 a rock crawler? The CC-02 is a scale trail and cross-country chassis capable of driving over rocky and uneven terrain. It does not have the extreme articulation, low gearing or specialised geometry of a competition crawler.
Can the differentials be locked? Yes. The front and rear three-bevel differentials can be assembled in a locked configuration. Locked differentials improve traction on loose terrain but increase tyre scrub and the turning radius on high-grip surfaces.
Should I lock both differentials? This depends on the intended use. Locking both can maximise off-road traction, while leaving one or both open can provide smoother steering and better behaviour on firm surfaces. Changing the setup later requires drivetrain disassembly.
Does the kit use independent suspension? No. The CC-02 uses front and rear rigid axles located by four-link suspension, similar in concept to many full-size off-road vehicles.
Does it include oil-filled shocks? Yes. CVA oil-filled dampers are included as standard.
What battery should I use? A compatible 7.2V NiMH or 7.4V 2S pack that fits the battery compartment may be used, provided the selected ESC supports the battery chemistry, voltage and connector.
Can I use a 2S LiPo battery? Yes, when paired with a LiPo-compatible ESC with correctly configured low-voltage protection. Confirm battery dimensions and connector compatibility before ordering.
What type of ESC is required? Use a brushed ESC suitable for a 540-size motor and the selected battery. A crawler-focused brushed ESC can provide smoother low-speed throttle control and a drag-brake function, but confirm motor and voltage compatibility.
Are ball bearings included? The standard kit does not include a complete ball-bearing set. Tamiya's compatible CC-02 full bearing set is a popular upgrade for reducing drivetrain friction.
What are useful first upgrades? Common first upgrades include a full ball-bearing set, steering improvements, stronger propeller shafts and tyres selected for the intended terrain. The standard kit can be assembled and enjoyed before upgrades are added.
Can I install a faster motor? Compatible motor upgrades are available, but higher speed is not always beneficial in a scale trail vehicle. The motor, gearing, ESC and battery must be matched carefully to avoid excess drivetrain load or overheating.
Is it suitable for beginners? The CC-02 is approachable for a patient first-time builder, although it is more involved than a simple buggy or touring-car kit. Careful differential, suspension and body assembly is important.
Is it waterproof? Waterproofing depends on the separately installed electronics. Unless the receiver, servo and ESC are all rated for wet operation, avoid water and thoroughly dry the chassis after damp use.
