The 1997 911 GT1 race car is a classic R/C model in the Tamiya catalogue of assembly kits. Originally released as the Le Mans race car replica, this kit recreates the Street Legal car that was released for homologation purposes. This replica returns on the TA03R-S chassis, which is a short wheelbase variant of Tamiya's highly successful and fun TA-03 4WD touring car. The actual car debuted in 1996, and was a street car with an extremely strong racing heritage powered by a 3.1-liter inline-six rear-mid engine generating nearly 600hp, it was said to reach speeds of up to 330km/h. The racecar took second and third in Le Mans in 1996, and went one better with a 1-2 finish in 1998.
90s Powerhouse
Developed by Porsche for the 1996 endurance racing season, this car was based upon the 911 (993) with carbon fiber body panels and a midship mounted 600hp 3.2-liter flat-6 twin turbo engine. In addition to three works cars, a number were also said to have been developed for private customers and use upon public roads. This assembly kit creates an R/C model of such a "Street" car, with the sleek, powerful body captured in lightweight polycarbonate and separate parts for the side mirrors and rear wing. Stickers are included to recreate markings, headlights, taillights and more.
The stretched form of the body with big rear fenders is accurately captured in lightweight polycarbonate.
Side mirrors on the front fenders are separate parts, with stickers recreating mirror surfaces.
A big wing and rear spoiler really add to the racy look of the car. Both are captured using separate parts.
Mesh wheels are employed front and rear, with different offsets. Racing slicks have sponge tire inserts.
Efficient and Agile: the TA03R-S
Efficient single belt-driven 4WD and quick steering response are the calling cards of the midship motor, short wheelbase TA03R-S chassis. Gearboxes front and rear house differentials for smooth cornering, and are sealed to protect the workings from dust and dirt, while high-performance double wishbone suspension employs oil dampers and utilizes dedicated touring car geometry (camber, caster, etc.), plus delta box lower arms for greater reliability.
The 3-piece steering tie-rod uses a center input setup to help ensure a smooth, intuitive drive.
CVA Super Mini oil dampers are fitted front and rear on the double wishbone suspension.
Here is the motor in its midship mount, the heart of the TA03R-S' efficient belt-driven 4WD.
The rear suspension setup uses reliable delta box lower arms, again with CVA oil dampers.
