Build one of the most recognisable European hot hatches with the limited-edition Tamiya Volkswagen Golf II GTI 16V. This 1/10-scale RC assembly kit combines an officially licensed, factory-painted Golf body with Tamiya's compact and adaptable MB-01 two-wheel-drive chassis.

The lightweight polycarbonate body is supplied painted in Bright Red with Smoke-tinted windows. Its wheel arches are pre-cut and the body-mount holes are pre-drilled, reducing body-finishing work while leaving the builder to complete the chassis, electronics, detail parts and sticker application.

Like the full-size front-wheel-drive Golf, this kit is configured with the motor at the front and power delivered to the front wheels. A 540-size Torque-Tuned brushed motor and Hobbywing-produced electronic speed controller are included. A compatible radio system, steering servo, battery, charger, tools and assembly are required before driving.

FAQ

Is the Tamiya Volkswagen Golf II GTI ready to run? No. This is an assembly kit. The chassis, suspension, drivetrain and electronics must be assembled before the car can be driven.

Is the body already painted? Yes. The polycarbonate body is factory painted Bright Red, while the windows are finished in Smoke tint.

Are the wheel arches already cut? Yes. The wheel arches are pre-cut and the body-mount holes are pre-drilled, which reduces the amount of body preparation required.

Do I need Tamiya PS paint for the main body? No paint is required for the main red body or Smoke windows. Paint may still be useful for small detail parts or touch-ups if desired.

Are the stickers already applied? No. The body is painted, but the supplied vehicle graphics and trim stickers must still be applied by the builder.

Does kit 47516 include an ESC? Yes. A Hobbywing-produced brushed electronic speed controller is included. The exact model or connector specification may vary by production batch or market.

Does it include a motor? Yes. A Tamiya Type 540 Torque-Tuned brushed motor is included.

Does it include a transmitter, receiver or steering servo? No. A compatible two-channel radio system and steering servo are required separately.

Is this front-wheel drive? Yes. This Golf kit is assembled in a front-motor, front-wheel-drive configuration to reflect the drivetrain layout of the full-size Golf GTI.

Can the MB-01 be converted to rear-wheel drive? Yes. The wider MB-01 platform can be reconfigured for rear-wheel drive by changing the orientation of the final-drive and steering components. This requires partial chassis disassembly and should be completed according to the Tamiya manual.

Can I switch to rear-wheel drive without moving the electronics? Tamiya designed the central chassis so the battery, motor and radio-equipment arrangement does not need to be completely removed when changing the drivetrain layout. Some mechanical disassembly and reconfiguration are still required.

Can the wheelbase be changed? The MB-01 platform supports short, medium and long wheelbases. This Golf uses the long 239mm setting, and changing wheelbase may require different chassis parts, body compatibility and drivetrain configuration.

Will another M-Chassis body fit? Only bodies designed for the selected 239mm wheelbase, track width, body-post position and wheel offset should be considered. Fitment should be checked individually.

Does the kit have oil-filled shocks? No. Standard friction dampers with coil springs are included. Compatible oil-filled dampers are available separately.

Are ball bearings included? The standard kit does not include a complete ball-bearing set. A compatible full bearing set is a popular upgrade for reducing drivetrain friction.

What type of battery should I use? Use a compatible 7.2V NiMH or 7.4V 2S battery that physically fits the MB-01 chassis and matches the included ESC connector and voltage requirements.

Can I use a 2S LiPo battery? Only use a 2S LiPo when the supplied ESC supports LiPo operation and suitable low-voltage protection is enabled. Confirm the ESC instructions, battery dimensions and connector before use.

What connector is fitted to the ESC? Connector type can vary by regional package or production batch. Check the ESC supplied with the kit before selecting a battery or adaptor.

Can the headlights and taillights be illuminated? Yes. The separate transparent light components are designed to support compatible separately sold LEDs and a suitable lighting controller.

Is the MB-01 suitable for beginners? Yes. Its modular assemblies, symmetrical suspension parts and compact design make it suitable for a patient first-time builder. Careful alignment of the drivetrain, steering and body is still important.

What are useful first upgrades? A compatible ball-bearing set and oil-filled dampers are common first upgrades. Steering components, tyres and drivetrain parts can be considered later according to driving conditions.

Is it suitable for racing? It can be used for club-level fun and M-Chassis driving where the rules allow it. Confirm the permitted chassis, motor, gearing, tyre and battery specifications with the event organiser.

Where should the car be driven? The Golf is designed for smooth on-road surfaces such as sealed car parks, prepared tracks and clean concrete. Avoid long grass, gravel and rough terrain.

Is the completed car waterproof? Waterproofing depends on the installed receiver, servo and included ESC. Unless all electronics are specifically rated for wet operation, avoid water and thoroughly dry the chassis after damp use.
